# Step 1: Orientation

|
Understand what the target is and what it is for. Use the target's
|
|
plan or spec, PR description, and commit messages when they exist.
|
|
Ask the user questions until you know both.
|
|
|
|
## CHECKPOINT

|
If subagents are available: is the background subagent for writing
|
|
the log and narrative files running? If not, spawn it now. Doing
|
|
that work in the main session distracts the user. Do not load the
|
|
next step until that subagent is running.
|
